Significant Battles
Fort Sumter
The battle at Fort Sumter was the first battle between the Confederate and Union in the Civil War. Confederate wanted control over the fort and requested for the Union to surrender. After being denied the confederate opened fire on the fort and didn’t stop for a total of 34 hours. The Union wasn’t prepared for an attack at all and ammo was low. Finally Anderson, commander of the Union, surrendered the fort the next day and no men were killed.
Compare and contrast the battle of Gettysburg and the battle of Antietam.
The battle of Gettysburg was the largest battle in the war, having more men fought and died than in any other battle in American history. This battle was also considered the turning point of the war and made it clear that the North was going to win. Much like the Gettysburg, the battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest battles in American history. It was considered the bloodiest single day battle in American history. In both the battle of Gettysburg and Antietam, the Union army came out with a win. Also in both the battles, Robert E. Lee of the south, retreated and withdrew his army, causing the North to win both the battles. These two wars were Lee’s main attempts in moving the war into the northern territory, but he failed when he decided to retreat. Antietam only lasted a day and had about 23,000 causalities, while the battle of Gettysburg lasted 3 days and had between 46,000 and 50,000 causalities. Both of these battles were main battles of the Civil War, resulting in the Confederacy losing to the Union and both of the sides losing a great number of men.
Compare and Contrast the strategies of the Union and the Confederates.
The Union was a very aggressive group. They did a lot of attacking, including the Anaconda Plan – a plan which isolated the Confederate nation and cut them off from supplies -which eventually led to the Confederate’s surrender. This technique helped “squeeze the south to military death” (Civil War home). The Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, and a couple of generals agreed that a passive-defense was doomed to defeat. The Confederate’s goal was not to occupy large areas of Northern territory, but to preserve the Union. The Confederacy had many officers that excelled in defensive tactics.
